4. New York (Upstate)

New York

Don’t be turned off by the high prices of New York City. In upstate New York, Syracuse University, as well as the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook all rank within the top 25 of the U.S. News and World Report rankings of best colleges for veterans.

They all boast low living costs, lower tuition, high acceptance rates – and surprisingly for such easy schools to enter, a great education.

For the SUNY schools, your Post-9/11 GI Bill will cover nearly all of the costs for three years, which is plenty of time for a bachelor’s degree if you’re willing to work. And upstate New York is generally conservative, for what that’s worth, and also friendly to veterans.
