William Alexander Faulconer is transforming from mortarman to business man. The Army infantry veteran is poised in May 2018 to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The Citadel* in Charleston, S.C.

“Most infantrymen don’t think their skills translate well into civilian jobs, but business is probably the best-suited venture for an infantryman,” he says. “It relies on heavy management skills, and if you were an 11C like me, a lot of math!”

Faulconer, 30, loves the versatility of a business degree. His goal is to become a consultant in finance or business, and he has his sights set on a dual law/MBA graduate program in Charleston.

Reverse Engineering

Faulconer figured what he wanted to do, then determined what education he needed to get there. Coming up with a solid plan is critical to post-military success. This generation of service members has access to excellent education benefits, and using them to their advantage can mean the difference between a dead-end civilian job and a career they love.

Every year we publish the Hot Degrees for Veterans list to help with this process. The list includes credentials like certifications and licenses for those whose career goals don’t require a four-year or advanced degree, or whose career might be enhanced by other credentials. The list is organized into four categories: bachelor’s degrees, advanced degrees, professional credentials and certificates. Each category includes 10 degrees, certificates or licenses with a description of the program from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Finding your passion is the first step. Determining what education or training you need to get there is the next critical step. Use the 2018 Hot Degrees for Veterans to help chart your course.

How We Determine the Hot Degrees for Veterans

Each year we ask the Military Friendly® Employers to identify the top 10 jobs they are recruiting veterans for. That data is used to compile the annual Top 25 Hot Jobs for Veterans list (If you missed this year’s list, visit GIJobs.com.)

Then we ask the Military Friendly® Employers to identify the top degrees and other credentials they look for when recruiting veterans for their top jobs. We use that data to compile the Hot Degrees for Veterans. Military Friendly® ratings are determined through the evaluation of public data and proprietary data gathered through the annual data-driven Military Friendly® survey process. Scoring is fully automated. For details, visit militaryfriendly.com/methodology.

Bachelor’s Degrees

If you’re transitioning from the military, chances are good that you have the Post-9/11 GI Bill at your disposal. At 100 percent eligibility, it pays the full cost of tuition and fees at a state-owned college or university for 36 months – long enough to earn a bachelor’s degree.

The bachelor’s degree can be a ticket to higher earnings and opportunities for advancement. A study by the College Board indicated that in 2015, the median annual earnings of a bachelor’s degree recipient with no advanced degree working full time was $24,600 (67%) higher than those of high school graduates.

The following list of bachelor’s degrees was identified by the 2018 Military Friendly® Employers as the top degrees they look for when recruiting veterans for the Top 25 Hot Jobs for Veterans. If you missed the Top 25 list, please visit GIJobs.com. For more information about the exhaustive algorithmic Military Friendly process, visit militaryfriendly.com/methodology.

Advanced Degrees

Earning an advanced degree can be a good long-term investment, depending on your career goal.

Research by the College Board indicates that those with a bachelor’s degree, on average, earn a median salary of $61,400 per year, while those with a master’s degree earn $75,200. Those with a doctoral degree earn a median salary of $100,100 per year, while those with a professional degree earn $110,900. It adds up over the course of a career, but earning an advanced degree takes time, effort and money if you’ve exhausted your military education benefits.

Consider your course carefully.

Professional Credentials

There are other credentials that can open doors or may be necessary for transitioning service members and veterans.

A professional credential is defined as a diploma, license, certificate or other document that proves an individual’s competency in a subject. If you earn a diploma or bachelor’s degree in nursing, it does not entitle you to practice as a nurse. You must earn a license from the state in which you want to practice.

However, if you want to drive a tractor-trailer, a Class A Commercial Driver’s License will get you behind the wheel. You can earn a CDL in a matter of weeks.

Certificates

You may not want, or need, to spend two or four years in college earning a degree. You can get started in some career paths with appropriate certification.

The CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification, for example, is the gold standard for IT security and can get you started down this career path. Certifications also can enhance a degree you already earned.

Certifications require far less time and money than degrees.
