Between them these two distributors employ nearly 50,000 people, and they both actively recruit veterans. In 2016 alone McLane hired close to 500 military veterans.
“McLane hires veterans for several reasons, and some of the most notable are their hard work ethic, accelerated learning curve and the fact that they are good team players,” says Jennifer Rojas, EEO compliance & inclusion manager. “Military veterans have also had the experience working side by side with diverse individuals regardless of gender, religion, economic status, etc. These characteristics are important in today’s workplace and it simply makes good business sense to hire veterans.”
Indeed, but you knew that. So does US Foods.
“US Foods recognizes how the values, skills and experiences of our veterans, Guardsmen and Reservists align to our business, including collaboration, high standards of excellence, leadership, ability to remain calm during stressful times and focus on safety,” says Bob Taylor, VP of talent acquisition and a former Navy officer. “For example, within the US Foods operations organization there are a variety of critical roles where we recruit those with military experience for operations leaders, fleet mechanics, CDL-A drivers, and warehouse, inventory and logistics personnel.”
Here’ another reason to consider this career track.
“The transportation and warehouse industry is one of growth and stability,” Rojas says. “Because the industry is large, many job openings will result from growth but also from the need to replace workers who retire or transfer to other industries. I was an operations specialist. We ensured safe navigation of the ship by using radars and charts to ensure we were keeping a safe distance from other ships and safely navigating through open waters.
How well has your Navy leadership training transferred to US Foods? My training in the Navy helped me develop a thick skin and afforded me the ability to excel under pressure. My training has helped tremendously when it comes to supervising a diverse group of people.
What hours/days do you typically work? We work a variety of shifts, but currently I am working on the night warehouse portion of training, so typically I work Sunday-Thursday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
What military skill do you use the most? Teamwork. Being in the warehouse I have learned that it takes every single one of us for our warehouse to be successful. That is the most valuable skill to possess, as a manager, because without my employees’ support, I can’t be successful.
Would you recommend this industry to other veterans? Yes. I believe that the food service industry is perfect for veterans. I found out about my job through the Hiring Our Heroes program. McLane was participating and I ended up with a fellowship to the procurement department. When the program completed there was an opening for my current position and I was offered the job.
How would you describe your job?
I create project plans and manage them throughout the project’s lifecycle. My projects can span from a small telecom upgrade to making sure the infrastructure is in place for a new division.
Why did you choose this career path?
The IT field is an ever-growing field. When I was offered the opportunity to get started in this field I could not turn it down.
What hours/days do you typically work? I usually am at the office around 7:30 a.m. and, depending on how much work there is, I leave between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
What military skills do you apply to your civilian job? I believe my skills working with all kinds of people regardless of rank or job really help with my position today. I have to work with all kinds of people in my projects: analyst, technicians, managers, directors, VPs.
Best advice for transitioning service members? Know what is available to you. I had no idea the Hiring Our Heroes Corporate Fellowship existed until I was in my ACAP class and it was quickly mentioned.
