It was nearly midnight somewhere in the Pacific when Steve Van Cott experienced his proudest moment as a Navy officer. A younger officer he had helped train relieved Van Cott as Officer of the Deck for the first time on board USS Columbia, a fast attack sub. “There was a lot of hard work and training wrapped up in his simple statement of ‘I am ready to relieve you of the deck and the conn (control of the ship), sir,’” he recalls.
Still Doing That. Today Van Cott, 38, still mentors those he leads at Eastman Chemical Company, a Military Friendly® Employer that makes products found in items people use every day. “I love the day-to-day challenge of working with people and ensuring they are able to function as an effective team in a highly technical environment,” he says. “I enjoy training and mentoring people as well as the collaborative, operationally challenging environment.”
Power Up. Van Cott leads a team of 40 Eastman employees and 15 contractors in Tennessee that provides electrical power and steam to Eastman’s largest manufacturing site. They move about 4,000 tons of coal each day to the site’s three power generating facilities and its industrial
coal gasification facility.
Air to Sea. Van Cott grew up in a small town in northeast Pennsylvania. As a child he wanted to be a pilot. But at the Naval Academy he was drawn to the unique challenges of the submarine environment.
Surfacing as a Civilian. After eight years of service, Van Cott was getting married and decided to leave the Navy. He began preparing for his separation nine months out and networked hard to land his first civilian job with a defense contractor.
The Secrets. During his transition Van Cott discovered two keys to post-military success. “The most important thing I learned is to be clear in your own mind about the type of civilian work you want to do, and what you would not want to do. There is a personal discovery process involved here and there is no shortcut – take the time to really probe that question,” he advises. “Once that is clear, get comfortable telling stories from your military experience that show how that experience translates to your chosen civilian career path.”[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
