Roles & Responsibilities of last position in the military: My last position in the Army was as a Brigade Assistant S3 at Fort Hood. Similar to Operations/Program/Project Management.
What was the biggest transition headache?
Learning how to get noticed and getting employers to understand the benefits of hiring military personnel who may lack direct industry experience can be challenging.
What skills did you bring with you?
Strong foundational leadership background, ability to lead, motivate, and make decisions.
What made you decide to join this organization?
I liked the location of the Burnet site relative to Austin and the welcoming culture which was pleasantly different than other companies I had opportunities with. I also liked the opportunity to work for a smaller company for greater exposure and diverse responsibilities
How did you research your options?
I originally worked with various military headhunters but did not like the experience. I primarily used networking and Linkedin
What advice would you give other transitioning veterans looking into employment?
Use all the military headhunters to help prepare you for interviews and to get some interview experience, but don’t let them pressure you into taking a job offer you may not feel is a good fit. Networking is the best resource. You can get better positions with better pay through networking and will have exposure to many more companies. Don’t panic if finding your first job takes longer than you thought it would and don’t settle. Really think about what you want to do and focus your efforts on finding opportunities that fit what you are looking for, but don’t be afraid to consider something you wouldn’t originally. Also, take advantage of all the free resources the military provides, especially free courses and certifications. In hindsight, I could have done so much more.
