The military was never the easy choice. Your options were never cut and dry. Your days were never 100-percent ordinary. All that being said, it is staggering to see the number of members who wish to remain local to attend schools (near base or home town) versus venturing to an out-of-state school to start fresh. Simply because you exited near a military base does not mean it is the region/area you need to stay local to. Moving to a new environment could give you a fresh perspective. This could be a chance to explore and find the new you in the civilian world!

Let’s take a look at three of the top schools for veteran attendance, and what the regions have to offer:

Creighton University – Omaha, Neb.

Creighton is a Jesuit Catholic university committed to intellectual challenge, critical thinking, inspirational leadership and service to others with a faith-filled view of the world. Founded in 1878, Creighton’s comprehensive academic offerings have contributed to its national reputation for educational excellence, drawing students from across the nation and around the world. With more than 8,400 students, more than 50 undergraduate majors in arts and sciences, business, nursing and adult education, and programs in five graduate and professional schools, including law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy and more, Creighton is the ideal learning environment.

University of South Dakota – Vermillion, S.D.

A historic mecca where Louis and Clark made history along the Vermillion River, Vermillion is known for its accredited museums and quiet nature. If you are looking for a place to learn about American culture with a small town feel and a quality education, Vermillion is a top choice. Vermillion would be your choice for a simple life-style that is far removed from big city events.

National University – San Diego, Calif.

Beach lover’s galore in paradise. If you like sun, surf and smiles, this is your best bet. San Diego is home to things like the USS Midway for Naval history and a plethora of natural parks for exploration. This is your West Coast option with more of a relaxed attitude and a very veteran friendly atmosphere.

Bottom line is that if you decide to break away to explore your cultural opportunities, there is nothing stopping you from moving back to your area of comfort. Allowing yourself to explore different parts of the nation while making your transition to the civilian sector (with education as the catalyst) could be the answer to the next phase of your life.
