What prompted you to return to school?
Exiting the military during times of economic uncertainty, I knew that the only way to advance my professional life was to possess a collegiate education. I also knew that the university atmosphere would be rich with student organizations and networking opportunities. All of these reasons influenced my return to school.
What military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, did you use?
G.I. Bill; The Post 9/11 GI Bill pays for 100% of my tuition, fees, book costs and housing allowances.
What has your experience been like as a student?
The experience I have encountered is one that is very unique. No longer was I another employee or even just a number, but instead I was treated with respect from the staff and students alike. Regent University challenges its students to become leaders by treating them like leaders.
What challenges did you have adjusting to campus culture after military life?
Adjusting to the cultural diversity of collegiate life was difficult for me, but manageable. Perhaps the most noticeable difference was between the mindset of working professionals and of traditional college students regarding what was considered important. I quickly learned studies were not necessarily task-oriented, but required constant critical thinking.
Do you believe your military experience has made you a better student?
My military lifestyle made me proficient with managing multiple responsibilities and fulfilling assignments with focus–sometimes in intense environments. This has benefitted my academic study load because I can utilize time management skills and endure through extended times of research and writing to meet assignment deadlines.
What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?
Some important advice I can provide is to enter the collegiate atmosphere with an open mind and maintain a sense of excitement towards the studies ahead. Though the mind will be challenged with extensive information, education’s purpose is not to destroy, but to enrich the world we live in.
