Robin Williams: Military Friendly Entertainer

When we use the term Military Friendly, we’re usually talking about employers or schools. If the term were applied to entertainers, however, Robin Williams would be at the top of the list.

Williams, 63, whose death was announced last night, was a legendary entertainer of the military. He traveled overseas many times with the USO to make service members laugh and forget they were miles from home and family. It’s something that tens of thousands of service members and veterans will not forget.

Last night the USO posted this on its Facebook page:

“The entire USO family is saddened by the news of Robin Williams’ passing. One of the great comedic actors of his generation, Williams traveled around the world to lift the spirits of our troops and their families. He will always be a part of our USO family and will be sorely missed.”

Hours later, more than 56,000 had “liked” the post – many adding their own comments and memories of seeing Williams perform while they were in uniform.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also honored Williams’ contribution to the military when he issued this statement:

“The entire Department of Defense community mourns the loss of Robin Williams. Robin was a gifted actor and comedian, but he was also a true friend and supporter of our troops. From entertaining thousands of service men and women in war zones, to his philanthropy that helped veterans struggling with hidden wounds of war, he was a loyal and compassionate advocate for all who serve this nation in uniform. He will be dearly missed by the men and women of DoD — so many of whom were personally touched by his humor and generosity.”

Thanks Robin. You were as Military Friendly as they come.
